CROWDSOURCED POLICY
CONNECTING PEOPLE & POLICY
Policy and advocacy are at the heart of The Coalition’s work. Early on, The Coalition developed a unique annual process to crowdsource policy that directly connects citizens and legislators, making the process accessible, inclusive and relevant.
Before each legislative session, Coalition members submit their transformational policy ideas, then digitally collaborate to refine and rank the submissions. The resulting product is an expansive policy platform that represents the interests of a diverse group of citizens.
OUR PROJECTS
Annual Platform Development and Distribution
Beginning in 2021, The Coalition facilitated a three-month process to gather policy contributions from hundreds of people. Members ranked ideas in an open-source platform and further refined throughout the year by interested Coalition members and Alliance staff. We officially released the policy platform with a total of 58 policy recommendations, and 20 of them later became state law.
This crowdsourcing process was strategically timed with the passing of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act of 2020 (CARES) and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). Following the release of our policy platform, Coalition members testified in front of numerous committees and worked with legislators to advance top priority ideas. Additionally, each year The Coalition hosts advocacy and lobby trainings as well as lobby days. These resources, trainings and lobby days build capacity and knowledge for our members, connecting them directly to legislators and leading to transformational policy change.
In 2023, we expanded our engagement and reach to ensure we were reaching more Coloradans than ever before. These efforts included Coalition “brainstorming sessions,” partnerships with other community organizations and attendance at numerous community events to ensure we were hearing from more than the “usual suspects” when it comes to policy. The result is our most collaborative and inclusive platform to date!
Since 2020, The Coalition has successfully influenced a total of 66 new state laws, directing $1.1 billion in state funding towards more regenerative social and environmental policies.
